Today, the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society.

Nowadays, advertising is a method of promotion. Critics of advertising argue that advertising is a main drive of soaring sales of products and services, inducing customer to purchase what they do not actually need in their daily lives. I partly agree with this statement.
There are a whole host of reasons why advertisements have a power to boost sales. First, advertising often works to create a best-seller image for a newly marketed product. Audiences often are tempted to purchase it in the hope that they can thus become one of the eyewitness of participants of a fad. Take changing cellphones as a example, users replace their phones every year, although the phone is in usable conditions. They might not need to make purchases, but advertising spurs they do so. Socond, advertisers often exaggerate account of popularities of a product with involvement of celebrities. Soon after a product is marketed, a number of buyers growing, it will evolve into buying craze.
On the one hand, advertising contributes to a throw-away society when people make buying decisions but not for the real demands. the advertisements as medicine, dietary supplement and other health-enhancing products are a typical example. Targeting to buyers who are doubtfull of worried about health, advertisers have sought to encourate audiences to think that they are threatened by such health problems as malnutrition, dysfunction in any parts of their bodies. Lack of knowledge in this field, the audiences will rush to buy advertised products. On the other hand, other factors also give a rise consummerism ( it is not role of advertising) such as mass production, population explotion which impulses buyers buy more than ever.
In conclusion, people today often are combarded by a daily substantial amount of advertising from mutiple media. Audiences should alert to these influence of advertiments on buying decisions to avoid temptation of unnecessary shopping.
